Cereal Galore!

A very small portion of my stockpile:

Now that I can walk again I'm getting back into couponing. I took a while off because it was literally getting really hard to even walk towards the end of my pregnancy. I went to the grocery store for necessities and that was it. But now I'M BACK! Between today and yesterday I have "bought" 58 boxes of cereal. 18 yesterday and 40 today. I paid nothing out of pocket and got back $8 in catalina coupons! Yeah for free cereal. This is a good week of "deals", so I planning on making a few trips to get everything I need! (ps. I still don't let the kids have "sugary cereal"...so that's ALL for me...and Ty :))!

How are YOU doing?

It has been over a month since I posted my couponing tips and now I'm curious how you all are doing? Have you started using coupons and/or websites to help you find deals ? Have you noticed a change in your grocery bills? Fill me in :)!

Kroger has some great deals this week. Total before coupons in this picture was $158.xx and I paid $34.xx for everything here. My biggest pet-peave happened Sunday very early afternoon. The sale had JUST begun and some of the things I was planning on getting were already gone--like the shelves were cleared. I hate when people are rude and clear the shelves!! I'll have to go back this weekend to see if they've been restocked.

Target has a great deal on cereal this week, so I picked up 16 boxes plus 8 kids tootpastes and 6 kids toothbrushes and Target actually paid me $2 and some change. I have enough coupons for 16 more boxes and more toothbrushes, so I'll make another trip later to get the rest.

Walgreens: Huggies Diapers 2.99

So a friend asked me if, when I find a great diaper deal, I would post it to my blog, so that's what I'm doing. Walgreens has an awesome deal on Huggies diapers this week (2/7-2/13). Here is the scenario:

Buy Huggies Jumbo pack diapers or Pull ups 8.99
Use the $2/1 coupon from here: IE or the $2 coupon from here
Use the $1/1 Walgreens coupon from the Walgreens Coloring Book (this is what it looks like, but with a different cover)
Pay 5.99
Get back $3 Register Reward

(thanks, Hip2save!)

*The coloring book can be really hard to find. I found mine back by the pharmacy, if you can't find it ask and someone may be able to help you. Even if you don't have it, it's still a good price. Good luck!

*Even though I don't care much for Huggies I still picked up 15 packs...can't beat diapers for 2.99 + tax!

Coupon Websites

Here are a few of the websites I use on a daily basis to find my grocery and other deals. I paired them up with the stores that I use them for and if I don't shop at your grocery stores I found blogs that do weekly match ups for your stores. I think this will really help you get started. I do not know the ins and outs of each store because I haven't shopped at them or looked into them, but on most of the websites they will have a complete "guide" to how each store works and what each store's rules are...look into that on that store's blog. For the stores I am familiar with I will try to explain with a little more detail. Also, many of these websites do multiple match ups so by going to one website you may be able to find what you need for 3 or 4 stores.

These are just the websites I use, there are SO many more out there so if you want more or different ones just look them up and you'll probably find plenty!! One more thing: ALWAYS check your local ad because prices may vary from city to city, so they may be slightly different from the blogs you check out. It also may take you a little while before you can start doing all the deals because if you haven't been getting the Sunday paper for a while then you may not have all the coupons, but if you start now you'll get going before you know it and you can still use Internet printable coupons until then :)!

Meijer--Macomb Money Savers, Cincinnati Cents, Bargain Briana, Meijer Mealbox (for store coupons)

Oh how I miss shopping at Meijer. The deals you can get are wonderful! Meijer takes manufacturer coupons, along with their own store coupons (found on the Meijer Mealbox link). Some stores double up to 2 like coupons and up to .50, but some stores don't double at all. Take a look at the posted websites for their coupon policy too!

Kroger (mid-atlantic region websites)--Mrs. Moneysaver, Mid-Atlantic Deals and Steals

Personally, I am still getting the hang of Kroger, but slowly I am getting it. Kroger has what they call different "regions" and for the different regions they have different ads and different rules. My stores are in the Mid-Atlantic region, and I believe MI is in the Great Lakes region. If you want to find blogs with match ups for your region, you just need to determine which region you're in and then google "Kroger great lakes region (or whichever one you're looking for) deal blogs" and more than likely it will bring up a few. My Kroger doubles coupons up to .50 and is unlimited. I believe some of the MI Krogers just started limiting how many coupons they will double. Maybe some of you who already shop the deals who use websites have good ones for Kroger in different regions?? If so leave it in the comments...

Walgreens, Target, CVS, Rite-Aid--Hip2save

Collin, from Hip2Save, does an AWESOME job on her match ups. They come complete with "lessons" for beginners at the top of each match up post. Read those if you have questions and before you get started, they are very helpful.

In the last few months Target changed their coupon system. They used to have a coupon generator and you could print as many of their store coupons as you wanted, now they've changed it so you can only print two coupons per computer. Also, some of their "store coupons" are actually manufacturer coupons with the store logo on them, so you have to watch out for those. Read Collin's posts on Target deals and it will help a lot. Target has lost a LOT of my business since changing their coupon policy. They used to have awesome deals every week, but now I honestly haven't shopped there in months because I can get better deals elsewhere. Sometimes I think stores forget that they make money off of coupons, so by letting customers use them they actually make more money!

Homeland-Cristi's (2) Cents, Coupon Princess

Publix-Southern Savers (Thanks Michelle!), Fiddledeedee

Marsh- Bargain Briana, Hot Coupon World (Jenni--you really have to dig through this website, but it's probably one of the best to help with coupon match ups. It's free, but you have to sign up for it. It can be confusing, but once you play around with it you'll get the hang of it)

Walmart-MANY of the websites listed do match ups for Walmart, so keep your eyes peeled when you're looking through them. Many Walmarts will tell you they don't take internet coupons, however, if you read Walmart's coupon policy it clearly states that they do. If you ever have a problem print their coupon policy and take it to their store manager. Many people suggest taking the coupon polity with you when you shop, it's probably a good idea, but since I've never had a problem I don't!

We also have a Walmart, but I don't shop there often except for things I need and Kroger doesn't carry. It's not that Walmart doesn't have "low" prices because they do, but they don't put out a weekly ad so I never know what's on sale and what's not. Also, because they don't put out a weekly ad I cannot do a weekly match up and see what I can get for free or cheap. I'd have to do it while I'm shopping in the store and that would take way too much work. So, I skip Walmart and find you can get MUCH better deals elsewhere. Of course if I were just going to Kroger without a list or coupons it would be more expensive than Walmart, but the way I shop Kroger or Meijer was always much, much cheaper.

General websites for online/store deals--Hip2save (by far my favorite), Money Saving Mom, The Krazy Coupon Lady, Slickdeals (also one of my favorites for toys, electronics and other things other than groceries), Hot Coupon World

Online coupon codes-
Naughty Codes, Retail Me Not

Whenever I buy something online (which is very often) I ALWAYS check out these two sites for "coupon codes". If there is a discount code offered it is probably on one or both of these sites so check them before ordering anything online!! Then when you check out you can put the discount code in the promotion box and save some $$.

Online printable coupons-coupons.com, smartsource.com, redplum.com, and many more!

Baby/Kid deals-many of the other websites I already listed will tell you about great baby deals, but Babycheapskate is ALL about baby/kid deals.

**********
I think one of the best pieces of advice I read once was "control your coupons"...meaning that your coupons are like cash. I always hand my coupons over to the cashier one at a time instead of handing over the whole stack because inevitably when I hand them all over coupons don't get scanned. I wouldn't hand my credit card over to the cashier, so I don't give all my coupons either. This way I can make sure coupons aren't sticking together and they all get scanned properly.

Also, if any of you have any questions leave them in my comment section or email me at shelbypaulk@gmail.com at any time. I can't wait to see if you all get started--you have to let me know if this has helped and let me know how you're doing down the road :)!

Coupons: Your questions answered!

I asked you all to ask questions in a previous post, so now I will do my best to answer them!

Can you use the same coupon multiple times for the same product? For example, I have 50 cents off 2 jars of spaghetti. Can I use two coupons for that?

If you have 1 coupon that says "save 50 cents off 2 jars of spaghetti sauce" and you buy 2 jars then you can only use one coupon. You can only use one coupon per item (or two items if that's what the coupon states). However, if you buy 4 jars of sauce you can use 2 coupons. The only exception to this rule is when you have store coupons. You are able to "stack" store coupons and manufacturer coupons. So, if you have 1 manufacturer coupon that states "save 50 cents on 2" and you have a store coupon that says "save 50 cents on 2" you can use both together. You just cannot use 2 store or 2 manufacturer coupons on the same item, it has to be one of each.

What are your best strategies for finding coupons...what websites do you use, if any?

My best strategy, by far, is looking at other blogs that do the coupon match ups. Also, there is an alphabetical list of coupons that gets updated each week with current, non-expired newspaper coupons, that I use very frequently. So even if there is something that's is not on sale, but I still need to buy it I can see if there is a paper coupon for it. This is that site (bookmark it!!)! This is a site that lists all printable coupons available (bookmark it too!!) Next post I'll have a list of all of the sites that I use.

My Meijer doesn't double...is it just my Meijer or do I have to do something special to get them to do it?

Most Meijers do double coupons, that being said most of the Western side of Michigan's Meijers DO NOT double. I know Kalamazoo's does not, but when we lived in Jackson theirs did (Ang-I think you're in GR and I'm pretty sure none in GR double, but it wouldn't hurt to call around). It is up to each store's manager whether they participate or not. If you don't know if your store doubles or not, I suggest calling and asking. Also, at the bottom of their ad it will usually state whether or not they double coupons (you can find their ad online or in the store).

I'm nowhere near the weekly/monthly budget you have! I'd love to know how you spend so little.

I'm spending less than $30/week (or about $100/month, which includes groceries, health and beauty and household items) and almost all of my budget goes to meat, milk, fruits and veggies. We don't drink pop or alcohol and I know a lot of people spend a lot of $$ on those two things alone. Also, most of the reason our budget is so low is because over time I've gotten such a huge stockpile of food that I have enough to last me until I can get it for free again. I think the biggest thing I've learned in couponing is don't just buy what you need for that week, but buy what you can get a good deal on that your family uses often. For instance, this week I bought 20 bags of cheese for under .50 a bag. Will I use that much cheese this week? No. BUT, I will definitely use it before it expires (and it can be frozen) and now I don't have to worry about buying it at full price because I can wait until another good deal comes along.

Also, if there is something that I know I will use a lot of and only have 2 or 4 coupons of but I know I want to buy more I buy coupons. So when I could get frozen vegetables for free at Kroger last week I bought coupons to get a lot of them. So I ended up with 44 bags of frozen veggies for 4.o0 and our freezer is stocked. Also, over the summer I ended up getting about 50 lbs. of ground beef and about 30 packages of fresh chicken breast for FREE (with coupons, of course) so I had enough to last a year. (Although, I stored most of it at my mom's when we were moving because I couldn't take it all and their freezer got turned down and EVERYTHING thawed out and was ruined--I almost cried!! I still have a little left though!) I also do this often with pasta, pasta sauce and other non-perishables so I can donate them to the local food bank. I was always donating food to charities in MI-I know how much they need the food and I can give a lot without spending a lot!

Another way I spend so little is many times you can get what is called "overage" on an item. So if an item costs 1.00 and I have a manufacturer coupon that is .50 off and a store coupon for 1.00 off (which you can combine) that gives me an overage of .50. I always put that extra money towards something I don't often have coupons for (ie. milk, fruit, veggies). I will never clear the shelves and if I want 20 of something I'll go to 3 or 4 different stores. I think that's so rude and hate when I want something but it's gone because someone has cleared the shelf.

Here is part of my food stockpile in our garage and the deep freezer which is very helpful (yes, things are still in boxes so this isn't it but I have to find room for it all):

Okay, I hope you're not all thinking OMG she's a hoarder...haha. That's totally not it at all, but it does help to stockpile--there is a difference :)! I got everything you see here for free or for pennies!

Do you plan our your meals for the week based on the coupons you find/what's on sale for the week?

Before I had a stockpile, yes, I used to shop according to what's on sale...now I have almost everything I need except for the fresh stuff. So, I still try to, but I don't have to make as much of an effort anymore. I do, however, plan my meal for each week. It helps us eat out less often and I don't get frustrated at 4:30 when I don't know what I'm going to make. I use this website which is awesome and keeps me very organized.

How much time do you spend searching for coupons on a weekly basis?

I'd say I probably spend a total of 2 hours a week cutting coupons from the paper and searching for deals. I explained in my previous post of what exactly I do before I shop, it is not very time consuming once you get the hang of it. Once I get my list of deals, I put them in a word doc. then either get out my binder and pull the coupons or I print them offline. I always shop on Monday (or Tuesday) so I have enough time to get all my deals together once they've been posted. Most of the websites I follow post their match ups on Sunday so I have a day to get my coupons cut and list made.

Where do you find your coupons?

The newspaper or online (the blogs will point you right to where you can find the online coupons usually) and Ebay if I need multiple coupons.

Do you buy things when you need them or do you hold out for when you can get a really good deal on them?

Like I stated before, I always buy things when I can get a steal on them...that is, unless I need them now. Then I'll buy one or two and wait until a big sale to come along. We, as a family, are not very brand picky, except for a few items (like ketchup :)). If you are brand picky then you may have a more difficult time finding great deals often. One HUGE misconception is, is that store brands are much cheaper than name brands even when you use coupons--this is not usually true. I NEVER buy store/generic brands unless there isn't a sale on a name brand item. All of the things I get for free are always name brand and never generic.

I usually find that when I get coupons, I spend MORE money because I'll buy things that I just don't technically need right away just to get the deal. Help me!

Do not stock up on an item or buy an item your family does not use just because it's inexpensive. If you won't use it, even if an item costs 10 cents, it's still 10 cents down the drain. There is at least one thing per week that I can get for free at the grocery store, so if we use it that's what I stock up on. If you do this every week soon you'll have a big enough stockpile that you won't have to buy things when they are not on sale. You don't have to buy 20 of something, but even 5 will help your budget!

Also, I make a list of what I need at the grocery store every week and I stick to it! I also never go to the store hungry, especially now that I'm pregnant because then I want to buy everything I see :)!! If I have .50 off of lets say crackers that are on sale for 2.00, I know that at some point if I am patient I can get those same crackers for FREE somewhere so I will wait until that deal comes along! That's my motivation for sticking to my list! I also don't take my husband or my kids...EVER. I would spend double what I spend if I took them!

You always seem to get good deals on diapers and wipes from there (Walgreens)...how?

If you are patient enough, you can get great deals on diapers and wipes anywhere. Just this past week I got 24 packs of Pampers diapers from Target for 3.25 a package. I have never paid for wipes, you can always get those for free and I won't spend more than 3.00 or 3.50/pack of diapers. I'll admit it, I am a diaper snob. I only use Pampers because that's what works/had worked for my kids. I used to buy a lot of Huggies and I almost always got those for free or close to it. I use my food stockpile mentality the same way I do for stocking up on diapers. I am going to use them and they don't have shelf-life. Plus, if I don't use them all I can give them away to friends/family who will use them and it hasn't broken my piggy bank.

Here's a small hint too, it is almost ALWAYS cheaper to buy the smaller (jumbo) package of diapers rather than the big box. What you do is you wait for the jumbo size to go on sale then you also use a coupon. So, even if a big box goes on sale you can only use 1 coupon on it. Whereas if you wait for the jumbos to go on sale you can use one coupon, but you'll get more for your money because there are fewer diapers in the package. So just buy 2 packages to equal one big one. This is when your calculator comes in handy. Before buying diapers you should calculate how much each diaper costs. Does that make sense? Angie, from babycheapskate.com, has an awesome resource you can print and take with you to the store so you'll know when you're getting a good deal. (I, however, will never pay more than .10 a diaper because I have enough to last me until that AWESOME deal comes along)

Next post I'll give you websites and links so you can read up on how couponing works...

I think I've answered all of your questions (in either this post or the last). Now that I've answered them, do you have more...ask away!? I just hope this was helpful and hasn't confused you more!!

Couponing 101: Getting Started

First thing I think the beginner needs to know is where to start, so I am going to try to explain that first:

The first thing you need to start doing is you need to start getting a Sunday newspaper, every week (I almost always get at least 2 or 4). Don't just get your little town's paper, but get the largest paper in your State as possible. When we were in MI I didn't get the Kalamazoo Gazette, I got the Detroit Free press because it had much better coupons! (YES, different papers get different coupons) Check out your papers and try to determine which paper has the best inserts. I also use a lot of Internet coupons in addition to newspaper coupons.

What I do next is I cut out all the coupons in those "inserts" out and I file mine all in a coupon binder by categories (ie. dairy, meat, frozen foods, etc.). Yes, I realize this is fairly time consuming but really it saves me a lot of stress and time while shopping, especially if I have the kids with me. There are many ways to organize your coupons and a coupon binder is just one way. If you're interested in learning other, less time consuming ways organizing your coupons this site has some great tips. Also, utilize google...if you have a question about anything coupons just google it, I guarantee you can find the answer!

Here is my spiffy binder: not only does it hold my coupons, but my Register Rewards, catalinas, scissors, a pen, and a calculator!

I use baseball card holders to organize my coupons--you can find those just about anywhere. I think I got mine at Meijer. I also realize what you're all thinking! "OMG, she seriously takes that whole thing in the store with her?! That's so embarrassing!!" I do think it's a little embarrassing so I hide mine in a huge purse and take the whole thing in! No one even knows what's in my purse :)!

After cutting and organizing my coupons, I then sit down and go through all the websites that I use in order to find the match ups that I'm interested in. (Match ups = what's on sale matched with current, non expired coupons) This is my #1 secret: I do NONE of the work myself. You all think I'm so smart and so good at figuring out the deals where in reality I actually do none of the work--the websites do it all. There. I feel better, now you all know :)! I'm trying to get a list together of all the websites that I use for each store and find reputable websites for the grocery stores that you guys use and I'll get that out to you in another post.

When I determine what I want to buy I copy and paste the deal (from the website) into a word document and print that list to take when I go to the store, so I know exactly what to buy, the coupons to use and how much it should cost me when I get there. Sometimes I even get the coupons out beforehand and paperclip them to my list.

I hope that at least helps if you don't know how to begin! Any questions so far?? I'll try to answer all of your questions in my next post...

***Disclaimer: This is just how I do things, there are so many other ways and probably better ways, but this is what works for me!!

A GREAT deal...

So my favorite store the past few weeks/months has been Walgreens. I get CRAZY deals there!! I mean crazy...

This is what I got tonight, in one shopping trip:

1 pack of schick disposable razors
5 cartons of Orange juice
11 rolls of aluminium foil
21 boxes of Robitussin (medicine)
2 boxes of Ziplock bags
4 large bags of Reese's (for cookies--not all for me to eat :))
1 Kit-Kat (for me to eat :))
4 Arm and Hammer laundry detergents (I've never used it...we'll see??)
2 All laundry detergents
1 Cascade dishwasher soap
14 packages of bandaids
1 box of Fruitloops
24 Christmas gift bags
2-3 packs of Scotch tape

I "spent" $42.00-ish that I paid with a gift card, got $48.00 back in Register Rewards and will be getting back $25.00 in mail-in-rabates. That means I got all of this stuff for FREE, plus I actually made $30.00!!! Crazy, huh??!?

No, I'm not planning on keeping all of it. I'll either donate it to a homeless shelter or to Jennie's food pantry :).

What a steal...

I found another deal today!! I got all this stuff for $31.99 (including tax): It all would have cost me $155.58+tax.

Yeah, for never having to buy shampoo/body wash/lotion/diaper rash cream/baby oil for the kids every again :).

Cheap Diapers anyone??

I've said a million times before I can get a deal on just about anything, especailly diapers (thanks to babycheapskate)...well here I go again. Today I got 13 packs of Pampers jumbo diapers and 13 packs of Pampers Sensitive wipes (the big kind--the ones with 3 refills in it) for a grand total of about $30.00!! I had the greatest coupons and some good cashiers, you'll know what I mean in a minute.

I had these coupons (I could print as many as I wanted): "$5.00 off Pampers diapers and wipes "AND "Get a $5.00 Target gift card with the purchase of Pampers diapers and wipes". I also had manufacturer coupons to combine with it.

So, I bought 13 packs of Pampers (on sale for $8.99) and 13 packs of wipes ($5.99 each).

13 x 8.99 = $117
13 x 5.99 = $78

Target allowed me to use both coupons at the same time so subtract $10 ($5 off and a $5 GC that you can use on a different transaction...so I had to do several transactions) from $14.98 (8.99 diapers +5.99 wipes) which equals $4.98/diaper and wipe combo and that's without manufacturer coupons, which you can stack on top of Target coupons!! So I ended up getting each pack of diaper and each pack of wipe for $1.50 EACH! Hopefully that makes sense!

I'm going back tomorrow for MORE :)! (BEWARE, though, I don't think every Target will let you use both coupons together, but even if they don't it's still a pretty good deal!)

I have the coupon saved on my computer, if anyone wants it you can give me your email address in the "comments" section and I will try to email it to you.

Stocking Up!!

Okay, well for most of you that know me you know that I can get a deal on just about anything. Well, a couple of weeks ago Target had a coupon for Huggies products and I definitely took advantage of it. I bought 140 travel size packages (normally $1.47 each) and I got them all for free (well actually I got money off the rest of my purchase because the coupons were for $1.50 off any Huggies product). I also bought 60 containers of the normal size wipes (normally at least $2.50 each) for a total of almost $5.00. I think we'll be set on wipes until both babies are out of diapers (seriously)! I also got 12 bottles of Huggies shampoo or baby body wash (normally $3.00 each) for $1.50 total.

These are the regular size of wipes, the 140 travel size are already packed away!! Right now they're taking up a good portion of our closet.

Then yesterday I found a great deal at CVS. I bought 16 packages of Pampers diapers jumbo pack (normally $10.50 or more each) for a total of $40.00 (that's $2.50/package). Then this morning I went back to CVS because I found more coupons and they had a great deal on Huggies diapers. This morning I bought 32 packages of Huggies diapers jumbo pack (normally $10.50 or more each ) and 6 bottles of Johnson's baby wash (normally $4.50 each) for a total of $29.00!!! It turned out to be about $.75/package of diapers!! My mother would be so proud!!

It's going to be a pain to move them all, but I couldn't pass on such a great deal!!

Riley was excited to see all the diapers because they all have pictures of babies on them, so she went from package to package kissing each baby!! It was priceless.... (This picture shows half of the diapers)

Pampers in Riley's closet...some are for her and some are for the new baby!

So this is what we got and how much I spent:

140 travel wipes: FREE

60 pkgs. of normal size wipes: $5.00

16 pkgs. of Pampers: $40.00 ($2.50/package)

32 pkgs. Huggies Supreme: $25.00 ($.75/package)

6 J&J products: $2.00

12 Huggies shampoo/body wash: $1.50
